Everything You Need to Know About SSL Certificates

What is an SSL certificate ?

The full form of SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. In simple languages it’s a global standards for security technology that enables encrypted communications between a different web browsers with a web server or web servers. It is being used by millions or billions of persons and online businesses to reduce the possibility of personal information (like usernames, passwords, emails, credit card numbers etc.) from being robbed or misused by techie or Hackers. The SSL allows a conversation that is only private just between the two parties.

The SSL Certificate is to be installed on a web server to create a secure connection. Which is also called a “digital certificate”. It serves two purposes

  • Firstly, it authenticate that the website you are logged in is not a bogus website.
  • Secondly, it encrypts the communication of data that is being transmitted.

Are all SSL certificate the same ?

Absolutely No,, Basically, there are different types of SSL Certificates which are based on number of factors like domain names or subdomains, which are mentioned below:

  • Single – It secures only one domain or subdomain name.
  • Wildcard - It covers only one domain name and an unlimited number of its subdomains.
  • Multi-Domain – – It secures multiple domain names

There are different level of validation that are needed, which are:

  • Domain Validation – This level is the slightest expensive, and it covers only basic encryption and verification of the ownership of the domain name registration. This kind of certificate takes a few minutes to several hours to receive.
  • Organisation Validation – This is the second one, in addition to basic encryption and verification for the ownership of the domain name registration, certain other details of the owner like name and address, are also authenticated. This kind of certificate takes a few hours to several days to receive.
  • Extended Validation (EV) – This is the third one, which provides the highest degree of security. It is being thoroughly examined before this certificate is issued (as it is strictly specified in guidelines set by the SSL certification industry’s governing consortium). In addition to the ownership of domain name registration and entity authentication, the legal, physical and operational existence of the entity is also verified thoroughly. This kind of certificate usually takes a few days to several weeks to receive.

Who may need an SSL certificate ?

The SSL certificate is needed by individuals or organisation’s that use their website to require, collect, receive, process, store, or displays confidential or sensitive information. Some examples are like:

  • logins and passwords
  • financial information (e.g., credit card numbers, bank accounts)
  • Individual personal information like their names, addresses, birth dates, contact number, email id etc
  • exclusive information
  • legal documents and contracts
  • client lists
  • medical records

Where can you get SSL certificate ?

Basically, the most important part to get SSL certificate is where it comes from. SSL certificates are issued by authorized Certificate Authorities (CAs), organisations that are trusted and to verify the identity and legitimacy of any organization requesting a certificate.

The certificate applications are accepted by the CS’s which is his or her role, he/she has to firstly authenticate applications, issue certificates, and maintains the status of information on certificates that is issued.

Keep in mind:
When choosing the right SSL provider, consider the fact that users’ web browsers normally keep a cached list of trusted CAs on file – so if a digital certificate is signed by an entity that’s not on the “approved” list, the browser will send a warning message to the user that the website may not be trustworthy.

How will visitors know my site has an SSL certificate ?

There are four factors or sign:

  1. “Https” will be appears before URL instead of http.
  2. Padlock or lock sign to the left of a URL in the address bar.
  3. A trust seal
  4. A green address bar (when an EV SSL certificate is issued).
